He became a Christian during his final year at university in 1983. Shortly afterwards he felt a call to become a pastor after being convicted by Matthew 9:37 “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” From 1988-1989 Rev Muriu served as a pastoral intern at Nairobi Baptist Church and then was called to serve at the Nairobi Chapel. His personal mission conviction draws from Psalm 71:18 “Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.” He feels that his primary calling in life is to raise up a legacy of leaders, especially African leaders, for the church of Christ worldwide. His heart’s desire is to see the African church rise up to its place and calling in the work of missions alongside its worldwide brothers, and to make its own unique contribution to the task of missions.
Rev. Muriu is married to Beatrice Wambui, who serves as the Children’s Pastor at Nairobi Chapel. Together they have 4 daughters, 18, 17, 14 and 7 years of age.
Nairobi Chapel has an attendance of 1,400 adults and 400 children on an average Sunday. The Chapel has planted many churches over the years. One area of particular concern for the Chapel is ministry to the poor. As a result of this passion, many ministries among the poor have emerged, including 2 medical clinics, and an HIV-AIDS work. Nairobi Chapel has developed a ministry that seeks to house and educate young at-risk girls who live on the streets of Nairobi, and an equivalent ministry for young boys.
